At OSSCube – A Division of Happiest Minds, we’re in the business of solving problems. We help people choose solutions that best fit their business, and we do it in a unique way. Our philosophy is deeply rooted in the open source technology community; and its growth is vital to ours.
Because we are so invested in the open source, the annual Black Duck “Future of Open Source Survey” is one of the highlights of our year. This survey compiles responses from vendors and non-vendors across a variety of industries, and polls their knowledge and use of open source technology. The point is to show how open source is evolving, and how it can be used to change the way business gets done.
This year’s survey included responses from 1240 business people. The results were interesting, optimistic, and often times record-setting. Here are the three things we were most excited about in the results:
1. 68% of open source adopters are using it to increase efficiency and lower cost.
The open source platforms often come with free version, or low-cost options that allow for customization. These customized platforms help increase efficiency, and cost much less than a pre-built option with costly add-ons.
2. Over 50% of the companies surveyed are trying to create new products/ services
The flexibility and scalability of open source makes it easy for people to try new things. The lower costs reduce risk, and the community of creators and thinkers are there for support when you need it. The community is your own group of beta testers and thoughtful contributors.
3. 8 out of 10 adopting respondents are choosing open source based on quality.
The open source community is passionate and dedicated to the cause. The products created by the users are high-quality, and on top of new trends. this is because open source isn’t just about building businesses; it’s about advancing technology and growing together.
Open source tools are valuable, utilized around the globe, and contributed to by countless enterprises and IT professionals. The movement is creating lighter, faster, more efficient frameworks; it’s changing the way things get done and finding ways to things that haven’t been done before. More than 50% off all enterprises surveyed are expected to contribute to open source in the next year, are you one of them?
There you have it! Those are our three most exciting statistics from this year’s Future of Open Source survey. There was plenty more information, and we’ll be bringing you lots of it (and explaining how it can help you), in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
