The launch of iPhone X was a much reveled and hyped event recently. With iPhone user standing in long queues to replace their previous version with iPhone X with cynics saying it is an overrated product with overrated reaction. Positive or negative, the launch of iPhone X successfully managed to garner attention. What gets me excited about this new product is the technology advancement.
Technology and innovation has always been a competitive edge for iPhone and the products form the brand has always been superior to other products present in the market. The iPhone X has set a new trend by introducing new advance technology features and is going to pave the road for the next gen mobile apps.
So, while the spectators and the crowd debates over the whooping price quoted for iPhone X, let’s look at what is new with this product in terms of technology.
Being a technology enthusiast and having worked in the mobility domain, the key takeaway for me from the recent iPhone 8 and X product launches is the introduction of custom GPU and A11 Bionic Chip into the new iPhone models. This opens up immense possibilities of how we can build new mobile Apps by leveraging the computing power of the GPU and the Artificial Neural Network processing.
We will begin to see Apps that will be optimized for Siri, and Machine Learning capabilities at the device level. Combined with CoreML and GPU at the device, developers will build more intelligent Apps in the future. This will also be a big boost to Augmented Reality Apps that can render richer user experience than ever before. Remember Apple has introduced the ARKit in IOS 11.
Innovative business use cases leveraging these capabilities will emerge across Industry verticals. We will see more innovative, high performance mobile Apps combined with Augmented Reality, Machine Learning most of it computed at the device rather than in the cloud. For example, Healthcare Apps will perhaps be able to provide an in-real-time diagnosis of heart rate, ECG and other vital parameters. Retailer will be able use smarter Mobile Apps for digital merchandising and shelf analysis using better image recognition. Speech-based language translation will become more seamless and real time. Manufacturing and automotive shop floor managers should be able to use Mobile Apps to seek instant information from machines just by pointing their phones. Advertising and gaming developers will have interesting times ahead.
The emergence of technology as a differentiator in new products is a good news, not just for the IT companies, but also for marketers, analysts and users. We should have some exciting times ahead, and new gen technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Intelligent Automation, NPL, Augmented and Virtual reality will be the critical catalysts for innovation and distinction in products. The developers will be on their feet to bring in some real innovative Apps with increasing competition and the need to have a competitive edge in new products.
The time is not far when the physical world and the digital world be seamlessly integrated to create a ‘phygital’ world and mobility and innovative apps will play a key role to make that happen.
