Why do we celebrate Pride Month?
Significance of the Pride Month:
Pride month commemorates a pivotal point in queer history: the Stonewall uprising in June 1969.
We celebrate June as Pride month to spread the message of equality, acceptance, freedom, and regard for our unique selves. The LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) community has used the term “Pride” to fight for visibility, representation, and the establishment of our rainbow identities.
It is symbolic of our right to uphold our self-esteem, dignity, and humanity, regardless of our sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, gender identity, faith, and diverse backgrounds.
Why is it important to celebrate Pride in the workplace?
As leaders in human resources, we must endeavour to put people first and share stories of our efforts to drive change. It highlights our strides to celebrate diverse voices and welcome alternative spaces for all to feel connected, seen, heard, and feel safe.
Inclusion starts from self; if you are open to learning and accepting that’s where the journey starts.
How to celebrate Pride month in your workplace?
Many studies suggest that people feel more engaged and develop a sense of belongingness when the organizational goals and values and closely aligned with people’s beliefs and values.
While a lot has evolved in our personal lives and workplaces in the last two years, the continuous effort to establish and secure a diverse and inclusive culture across enterprises is here to stay. Therein lies the joy and power to reiterate our belief that no one is alone. It’s a reminder for all in this and every Pride season to take pride in who they are and be unapologetic about it.
Here are some ways organizations and enterprises can promote and celebrate the Pride month:
- Enlighten ourselves
It is important to create educational opportunities for all associates to understand and live the message of love and kindness for all. Organising Pride talks & discussions, lectures, fun activities, and games to educate employees on the history, the current happenings, and what the future looks like for the LGBTQ+ community is a wonderful way to learn.
- Harness the power of social media
The internet is a powerful place to showcase support for the LGBTQ+ community. Using relevant hashtags, love and equality quotes, and affirming messages from allies are great ideas to display solidarity for the cause.
How can we support the LGBTQ+ community during Pride?
- Listen – Without judgment. Most times, empathy is built simply by listening to someone especially members of the community.
- Ask – Ask how you can support anyone from the community.
- Learn – Learn about different elements of the LGBTQ+ community with an open mind. Movies and books are good sources to develop an understanding.
- Respect- Respect everyone and make them feel comfortable.
